Evident ClearStone Live ChronoGraphs for Oracle Coherence

Evident ClearStone Live ChronoGraph feature provides historical visualization to complement the ECSL real-time monitoring solution. It delivers rich and flexible historical visualizations that can be used to compare performance across multiple time series or trends among performance metrics. While dozens of pre-defined templates are provided, the ECSL ChronoGraph Builder supports ad-hoc historical visualizations. Visualizations can be designed and published by end users - without any SQL or UI programming experience - in minutes. Sophisticated analysis can be easily performed by end users when they need it, with the parameters that are important to them, without vendor reliance or other professional services.

Users can analyze historical data based on Coherence cluster, cache, node, and Extend-TCP statistics. The historical data can be trended from hours to months with a granularity of 5-minute to daily intervals. Users can choose from dozens of key performance indicators (KPIs) collected by ECSL and compare current performance metrics against historical averages. A common use case is the comparison of past to the current real-time performance, but without limitations as to the time series or metrics that is of interest to the end user.

The ECSL ChronoGraph feature set includes four main components:

  • ChronoGraph Builder – a visualization designer tool that enables users to design new historical visualizations known as ChronoGraphs.
  • ChronoGraph Viewer – enables users to access and view multiple historical ChronoGraphs and is integrated with the ECSL Real-Time Console.
  • Data Warehouse – an optimized data warehouse used for storing the historical data and it is implemented using an Oracle Database.
  • Database Publisher – an ECSL server side component that is responsible for storing the real-time data into the Data Warehouse.

A New Approach for Providing Ad-hoc Historical Visualizations

The Evident ClearStone Live Chronograph feature is a historical visualization framework and not a standard reporting tool. Its benefits include:

  • Build Your Own Reports – ChronoGraph Builder is an end-user tool, not a developer tool, so it does not require report writing or database expertise. Configuration is GUI-based, so there is no need to learn a report scripting language or SQL to generate visualizations.
  • Real Time Analysis and Historical Context Side-by-Side – integrated real-time and historical visualizations using a single GUI (ECSL Real-Time Console).
  • Browser Access, Client Free – no client software is required – the GUI is based on Adobe Flex, which runs on any web browser with an Adobe Flash Player plugin.
  • Ad-hoc Visualizations – ChronoGraph visualizations are flexible and self-sufficient. Users can start with the pre-built templates and then quickly generate custom visualizations using the intuitive Builder tool.
  • No PS Commitment – no need to go back to the vendor or contract for professionals services to get custom views on your cluster’s historical performance.

Evident ClearStone Live ChronoGraph Builder

The Evident ClearStone Live ChronoGraph Builder is the designer tool used to create new historical visualizations (ChronoGraphs). Using the Builder, a designer can create templates that display trend charts for specific metrics that are stored in the data warehouse. Each ChronoGraph template is customizable (chart type and formatting, such as axis, titles, legend, etc). In addition, the designer can choose from many metrics with different levels of granularity. Common aggregation methods are available to consolidate/summarize data across multiple data or time series. Runtime and default parameters can be specified.

Once the designer has created a template, it can be published (saved). The stored template can then be accessed, loaded, and initialized by any user.

Evident ClearStone Live ChronoGraph Viewer

The Evident ClearStone Live ChronoGraph Viewer is the interface used to access the published ChronoGraphs. The ChronoGraph Viewer is deployed as a plug-in (a tab) on the ECSL Real-Time Console application. It allows end users to access and view multiple ChronoGraphs in a single view. The Viewer user interface consists of a Template Catalog to select an available ChronoGraph, a Parameter Panel to enter any initialization parameters required for the specific visualization, and the Viewer Panel that contains the actual cluster performance charts and graphs specified by the template using the historical data contained within the Data Warehouse. The following are sample templates as seen within the ChronoGraph Viewer illustrating various charts and graphs of historical data:
