Evident ClearStone Live (ECSL) for Java is targeted for enterprises and ISVs who develop, manage, and support business critical, large scale distributed Java applications and middleware systems. Users may include:
- Developers, testers, and architects who are responsible for building and designing high performance custom Java applications that may be deployed in J2EE platforms or standalone systems.
- Operations teams responsible for monitoring and supporting the business critical Java applications.
- Infrastructure managers responsible for middleware application J2EE systems that support the applications.
Evident ClearStone Live (ECSL) for Java will only support Java based applications and middleware systems.
- The monitored system(s) must be running on Java 1.5 or newer.
- Each monitored Java process must have Java Management Extension (JMX) enabled.
- Applications that require custom monitoring should expose Managed Beans (MBeans) via JMX for real-time application monitoring.
JMX Collection Considerations
- For web application, the administrator should consider deploying the Evident JMX Proxy Servlet into the J2EE containers. Otherwise use JMX Remote to monitor the JVMs.
- The administrator should consider deploying at least one ECLS JMX Collector (“Collector”) for each cluster of JVMs in the same network.
The system requirements for monitoring distributed Java environments will vary. Some environments may require multiple ECSL Management Servers. The sizing largely depends on the size and depth of the monitored environment. The following attributes impact the size of the ECSL environment:
- # of Java processes
- # of Mbeans and attributes per JVM
- Polling interval
- # of derived/calculated attributes and records
The product supports the following types of system configurations:
- System Architecture (single or multi-server)
- Dual-CPU/Dual-core/Quad-core x86 processors (1.8 GHz+)
- Four/Six/Eight core UltraSPARC T1/T2 processors
- 4GB - 64GB RAM (additional may be required depending on the size of the monitored environment)
- 2GB Disk space available
- Gigabit Ethernet network interface(s)
- Operating Systems
- MS Windows XP Pro SP2 or MS Windows 2000/2003/2005 server (32-bit or 64-bit)
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 6 and higher (x86_32 or x86_64)
- SUSE Linux Enterpise 9 (x86_32 or x86_64)
- CentOS 5.3 (x86_32 or x86_64)
- Sun Solaris 9/10 (SPARC)
- Database Servers
- Oracle 10g /11g (required for Chronograph feature)
Note: Avoid the use of a virtual machine for the software deployment. The Evident ClearStone OpCache is an in-memory distributed cache that runs across multiple Java Virtual Machines. Paging memory to disk should be avoided to maintain proper performance and health of the software. As with any JVM, garbage collection (GC) operations may slow down by several orders of magnitude if memory is paged to disk. JVMs should be pinned into physical RAM, or at least configured so that the JVM will not be paged to disk.
