I had the pleasure of attending my first Redis Meetup in NYC on 12/2. The topic was how WePlay.com is using Redis for their youth sports website.  Noah Davis and Luke Melia gave a very interesting and helpful talk on how they are using Redis – what it can and cannot do, how it compares to other solutions such as Memcached, Cassandra and other NoSQL options.  You’ll find a copy of the slides here.

Thanks to Ivan Brusic for organizing the meetup.  About 35 people attended, and the talk was very interactive – there were 3-4 folks in the audience actively using Redis (or at least the ones that spoke up) and shared some of their thoughts and suggestions on how to address topics such as persistence, pub/sub, replication, and kinda/sorts transactions.  They talked about challenging features like presence and activity feeds and how they designed Redis to handle these.

Of course, my interest was around management and monitoring – this was more of a development crowd interested in implementation issues.  Although in an informal discussion several folks did highlight that they were looking for some easy-to-use monitoring tools – they were aware of AppFirst, so we have to do a better job of getting these communities to learn about Evident!

I really enjoyed meeting the folks and hearing the talk, and look forward to the next meetup.
